Tonsillectomy continues to be a common surgery in children. Two large studies show that the surgery will help kids with sleep disorders due to big tonsils, and will also help kids with recurrent infections, but perhaps not as much.
Sleep disordered breathing, which may include loud snoring, gasping at night, sleep apnea, and tless sleep, may lead to daytime irritability, and even poor school performance, and may be a sign that those tonsils need to go.
